ABOUT TREFADDER

Carbon capture through Nordic climate forests

Trefadder develops nature-based climate solutions across the Nordic region. Founded in 2019, it established Norway’s first commercial climate forest and now leads in biological carbon capture, delivering certified CO₂ removal and carbon credits while advancing forest protection, restoration, and biodiversity.

Establishment and launch in the agricultural sector

Trefadder AS was launched during “Bedriftens Dag,” with then Minister of Finance Siv Jensen in attendance.

Partnership with agriculture

Trefadder creates local jobs and collaborates with farmers to establish climate forests. The initiative was launched in the agricultural sector, with then Minister of Agriculture and Food Olaug Bollestad in attendance.

Winner of the ITSA Growth Program

Succeeding with a startup often requires significant capital and investors who believe in the company. Trefadder gained strong recognition by winning the ITSA Growth final, securing substantial funding from several well-known investors.

Winner of the Fauna Program

Trefadder was selected for the highly regarded Fauna program, led by Tore and Siv Gjeddebo. After six months of coaching and mentorship, the company went on to win the program, securing NOK 1 million.

Scaled production

Together with our investors, Innovation Norway and DNB, Trefadder invested in a significant increase in production capacity to remove even more COâ‚‚ from the atmosphere. In 2023, production nearly doubled.

Commercial breakthrough

Trefadder supports businesses with carbon offsetting and delivers annual COâ‚‚ removal equivalent to 100,000 tonnes. This represents a significant commercial breakthrough, elevating our production to a high international level.

CLIMATE FORESTS IN NORWAY

Caring for nature,
the long-term way

Trefadder AS’s commercial climate forests originate from an extensive government-led climate forest initiative run by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment (2013–2019).

The Norwegian Environment Agency, together with leading forestry research institutions, has invested more than NOK 50 million in Norwegian climate forest research between 2015 and 2021.

The climate impact of Norwegian climate forests is well documented, and Trefadder has, in collaboration with international partners, further developed climate forest methodologies, practices, and documentation.

DOCUMENTATION

Trefadder’s approach is grounded in research

The Norwegian Environment Agency has estimated that Norway can establish climate forests with a carbon capture potential of 447 million tonnes. Norway’s annual emissions are approximately 49 million tonnes of CO₂.

Norway therefore has strong potential for climate forests, particularly along the western coast, where there is available land and where the albedo effect has less impact.

Building on this research, Trefadder has developed a commercial methodology for the production and documentation of climate forests in collaboration with KPMG Canada. KPMG Canada has for several years been a leading provider of certification and verification of climate forests both within and outside Canada.

OUR VISION

Trefadder strives to be a driving force in addressing the defining environmental challenges of our time.

Through the development of forest projects that remove significant amounts of COâ‚‚ from the atmosphere, we are creating a sustainable future for generations to come. At the same time, we are committed to protecting and restoring biodiversity.
